Jun 1994 Jun 1996
Staff Photographer, Atlanta Bureau
Associated Press

IN PIONEERING WIRE SERVICE STYLIZED PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY:

I conceived, planned and executed a series of portraits of America's best hopes for gold medals in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Success required I convince AP sports and news picture editors , via a group of sketches I commissioned from my portrait ideas to give me work and travel time and money for props, airfare, rental cars and hotel accommodation. As I had already made contact with the United States Olympic Committee for a list of each member organization. With portraits conceived for each athletic discipline, I contacted each sport's governing body from the USOC list and asked who the best chance of a gold medal was. With this list complete, I evaluated each sport's qualifying regimen, athlete's hometown and training site to determine how I could photograph the greatest number of athletes in the shortest time while traveling and spending the least.

AS A STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER, PICTURE AND ASSIGNMENT EDITOR:

From behind a desk or via telephone, the duties of staff photographer at the Associated Press go beyond literal image making and include photo editing, assignment of freelance photographers to complete image requests from AP member publications, eliciting the submission of photographs from member publications to the AP, assignment of workspace, telephone lines for image transmission and film processing in local athletic facilities for member photographers coming to Georgia to photograph various events

Behind the camera, my duties included the completion of photographic assignments of local, state-wide, national and international significance in particular, the NFL's Super Bowl in 1995, two NCAA Southeastern Conference Football Championships, 2 years of the NCAA East Regional Men's Basketball and Southeastern Conference Tournaments. I was the only person to photograph O.J. Simpson's first interview and public appearance since his acquittal of murder charges. My international experience as an AP staffer included several months in Haiti covering events related to the US-led military invasion.
