Like in many parts of the world, larger “small business” provides a solid tax base for the government and jobs for the people. The guard is standing outside a family owned hospital that has maybe 40 beds and a basic medical infrastructure and employs maybe 50 people. For the workers a hospital as this is the first step into a medical career after their education as most of the employees such as nurses and med techs will one day be working in the developed nations. The guard will likely still be here.
Many small businesses in the Philippines are so small that they are not required to pay taxes. Though this may sound nice, from a business owner’s perspective, they do not provide a lot for whomever. This lady cooks meat in the afternoon and will only sell enough to provide free meat for her family. That is if she can keep her husband from eating all the inventory.
Here I was trying to capture motion at dusk hence the bumped up ISO and shutter speed. I was fighting the light as it was diffused but still not reflecting up onto the face far enough for what I wanted (I did do a little editing on his face, not the hat, only to increase the exposure - with that said the change on his arms is natural and likely caused by dirt as he is likely a farmer). All in all I think the photo would have been better if I could have waited 20 or 30 minutes for the light to have been low enough to actually illuminate his face the way I envisioned (but I had to go and was not able to do so).
