Jorge - I went back and studied the DNG files and I think this "safety" shot addresses your earlier observations. I am now a bit curious about the image degradation when the lens is stopped down. So much for the old masters who would shoot at f64 or even f128 !! I think the consensus with today's shooters is that medium f stops are optimal - I will play around with this a bit more and also on my way to Pro Photo to get a set of ND filters for the M mount lenses so I don't have to stop down so much to blur the water - thanks for your comments earlier!

Jorge - Here is a second version of the earlier horizontal shot. Both were shot at f22 with a hyperlocal setting however the horizontal was skewed towards the foreground. Thanks for your observations and comments they are very helpful and constructive - I think I will play around with various hyperfocal settings. As I understand the theory everything within the hyperfocal range should be in focus.

This was a single exposure. I over exposed by one stop on the A7r, as I find every Sony camera I have ever had underexposes by .75-1 stop. Then I really pushed the shadows in LR and got the image to my liking. Then I dumped it into Color Efex pro 4 and used Tonal Contrast to finish the image out. I only applied Tonal Contrast from about the horizon down. I find Color Efex can cause some serious banding and posterization in blue skies if your not carful. If you inspect the image at 100% you'll find some noise in my wife's dress because of the aggressive shadow pushing, but it looks fine on screen and prints good to 17x22, but I wouldn't print it any bigger than that.

It was shot with the 35/2.0. This is what I posted with it. If Exif data says otherwise it is wrong, I sometimes forget to change the number of lens (this is a F lens, not F.2) on the camera and end up with wrong Exif data. I had 3 lenses with me, 21, 35 and 100, and this ought to be 35. You are right :-)

Are you sure this was shot with 100mm lens? The perspective looks like a wide angle (35?) to me.

Thank you! Yes, I agree - there could be more opportunity for composition. Actually, I had to crop out a little on the right side because of an ugly metal barrel, which altered the composition somewhat.
