If you look carefully, there is a chain fireguard which could be pulled across the fire to stop embers or sparkes flying out into the room. Fires were a real hazard in medieval times and many houses burnt down this way.
I've enjoyed this series of photos as well, they are all very well composed and have such beautiful detail.
