Stephen,

You have been spoiled by the 21 Distagon with it's endlesss depth of field. The 50 1.4 is a wonderful all purpose lens - also my portrait lens of choice - the colors are spectacular. As far as a landscape lens - I have found I really have to shoot it at f11 or higher. The 35 f2 ZE is my favorite landscape tool - much better depth of field with a reasonable angle of view.

I have had my new Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 ZE for just over a week and a half now and have been putting it through its paces to find its strengths and weaknesses, so to speak. My Workhorse lense was the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM (sold) and then the Zeiss Distagon T 21mm f/2.8 ZE. Both these lenses have enormous DOF at the shorter Focal Lengths. This 50mm Planar has been purchased for use in low light conditions, primarily inside buildings where Tripods are not allowed. I will be using Apertures between f/1.8 and f/5.6. This image shot on my daily walk, shows just how restricted the DOF is with a 50mm Focal Length lense on a Canon EOS 5D Mk.II. Even at f/5.6 the wire infront and just behind the post( point of Focus) is blurring. Stephen
