I am considering getting the new 55mm 1.4 when it is available, but am also thinking of getting a Leica Monochrom instead, hopefully with a Noctilux lens. From what I've seen, the difference between Nikon/Zeiss and Leica/Leica isn't that great as far as image quality is concerned, though they do have their own looks. Where the Leica becomes interesting is ease-of-use. If it was just quality, I think it wouldn't make sense to go for the Leica, but I have found that my D800 plus 15mm Distagon is very heavy and bulky to travel with, making the Leica interesting though it still seems outrageously expensive.
Does anyone here have both, and an opinion on the difference?

My most recent: a 1953 Rolleicord TLR with 75/3.5 Zeiss Planar taking lens. Camera is beautiful cosmetically but has been sitting in a display cabinet for 25 years so needs an overhaul. I plan to use it as a backup to my 1999 Hasselblad 501 CM. -- My zeissimages Gallery |

I've just traded my Sony Nex 7 and some Canon gear for a Leica 8.2 and a Zeiss ZM 35mm f/2.8. Quite apart from anything else it will be wonderful to no longer have to carry 5 kilos of Canon on my shoulder. Leica arrived this morning so shots should appear shortly. -- http://merrill.zeissimages.com |

For what it's worth, I started my career as an illustrator, then a comic book artist, video game artists, art director VFX artist in film, then art director and gallery artist (paintings of landscapes). In all that time I occasionally had to use cameras as a utility, such as to photograph my paintings or to get reference for my illustrations or textures for 3D models.
In that time I only bought low end cameras (Polaroid, Yashika 2.25, N2020, D70, D5100). Now that I'm teaching for 7 years, I haven't had the time to paint at all, so I splurged on a D800, Zeiss 100mm ZF2 T* Macro-planar, and a Zeiss Distagon 15mm 2.8. The amazing thing about this new equipment is that for the first time I feel capable of making artwork with a camera. It's really amazing what a difference these lenses make to the output. Now, I don't feel so bad that I haven't the time to paint any more.

Well, for my own Christmas gift I purchased an Arca Swiss Cube. Great addition to my tripod with no more lopsided comps. It cost about as much as a new lens but I think its worth it. --
